That being the case, most people do not think about conductivity when selecting a hose; some just assume that all rubber hoses are electrically non-conductive. Unlike hydraulic hose and fittings, industrial hose and couplings are usually made by different manufacturers. While many industrial hose manufacturers suggest couplings to use with their hose for a given application, they cannot guarantee the assembly will perform to the rated burst pressure of the hose.
Industrial hoses are used to convey acids, chemicals, gasoline, abrasive materials, LP gas, solvents, welding gases and slurries. Many of the materials conveyed through industrial hoses can cause serious harm to workers and the environment. However, the hose assemblies that are used to transport these hazardous materials have no established safety standards! |
There have been rigid standards for hydraulic hose assemblies for over 50 years, but the same is not true for industrial hose assemblies.

Two previous blogs on our website address the dangers of fluid injection injuries. We recently received a comment on one of the articles from a person who sustained a hydraulic injection injury himself. It was only by luck that he received the surgery he needed; he was almost dismissed with a bandage on his finger.

We hear this question all the time. How long do hydraulic hose assemblies last? The bad news is that there is no simple answer to how long you should wait before replacing hose assemblies on your equipment. The good news is that there are signs that maintenance personnel can (and should) look for to determine when it's time for preventive hose assembly replacement.

We are still surprised when people who make a living maintaining hydraulic systems are totally unaware of dangers associated with oil injection injuries. But then again, maybe we should not be since it is not something that you see every day. I want to share this story with you because some day you can save your body part - or maybe someone else's. A hydraulic fluid injection is perhaps the most dangerous injury that can result from a hydraulic hose failure. One reason is that it can appear benign at the beginning so it often gets dismissed as not urgent and medical care is postponed. Another reason is that injected hydraulic oils are highly toxic - so in addition to a physical cut or stab, they literally poison you.
