While hose failure occurrences can be minimized with the best practice of regular maintenance, including checking hydraulic hose assemblies for wear and damage, there is no guarantee that they will never happen. Total failure of hose assemblies are relatively infrequent, but when they do happen, they can cause serious damage to equipment, and injure or even kill nearby personnel.

There are two typical types of failures in a hydraulic hose assembly: a fitting blow-off and a hose burst.

A fitting blow off typically results from the use of fittings and hose which are not specificallly engineered to be used together, or from improper hose assembly fabrication. When a fitting blows off, a hydraulic hose typically whips around, spilling hot hydraulic oil, hitting nearby equipment and endangering anyone close by.

A hydraulic hose can burst if it has been exposed to extreme working conditions such as

  • Improper routing (bending too tight, twisting, etc.)
  • Use at a higher pressure than recommended maximum working pressure
  • Use in high-impulse applications
  • Being exposed to UV light without any protection
  • Exessive rubbing against other components
  • Left in service past the expected working life
  • Damage from being pinched or crushed by equipment, etc.

Once a hose bursts, it can result in hot oil spills that pose a danger to nearby personnel, or can cause injection injury.

There are products available to address each situation. Hose burst systems contain the energy of hose burst and (most) of the media expelled during the incident. Hose whip restraint systems prevent a hose from whipping around in case it pulls out of the fitting (fitting blow-off). Injection molding machines are a typical application for this system.

Hose Whip Restraint System

A Hose Whip Restraint System prevents a hose from whipping around if a fitting blows off the hose. The system restrains hose movement using a collar that attaches to the hose with a cable assembly that secures it to the equipment. This solution does not contain the fluid within the system, so it is not suitable for use with media that is toxic, applications in sensitive environments, or where danger of a slip and fall could result from the spill.

Hose Burst Containment Sleeve

Hose Burst Containment Sleeves protect equipment and personnel from hose burst by containing most of the media spilled during the incident. They are designed to dissipate the energy from a hose burst, keeping it confined to the sleeve so that the media does not escape and cause damage. This solution is not advertised as hose whip prevention.
